Utility Locating in Galveston, TX

Galveston is the hardest locating environment on the Texas coast: salt in the soil and air, a water table a few feet down, sand that shifts, and infrastructure that is a layer cake of every era since 1900, rebuilt after every storm that made landfall.

A century of infrastructure, one storm at a time

Every major storm since 1900 left the island with partially rebuilt systems beside whatever survived, so excavation routinely meets abandoned generations of pipe and conduit under the working ones. Records for the older layers effectively do not exist.

The physics are hard too: saline groundwater a few feet down attenuates radar severely, salt accelerates corrosion on older metallic lines, and beach sand migrates. EM locating, conservative interpretation, and test holes do the real work here.

  • Layered infrastructure rebuilt after successive storms
  • Saline groundwater that sharply limits radar depth
  • Salt-accelerated corrosion on older metallic lines
  • Historic district utilities predating any records
  • Port and industrial waterfront services on the harbor side

Galveston FAQs

Galveston Utility Locating FAQs

How do island conditions change the locating approach?
Saline groundwater absorbs radar energy within a few feet, so GPR contributes less here than inland. We weight electromagnetic locating, read conservatively, and use vacuum excavated test holes where depth actually matters.
Will you find the abandoned older layers?
Sometimes. Corroded and non-metallic abandoned lines are genuinely hard targets, and we flag the limits of coverage honestly instead of implying a clean sweep. What we can do is verify the corridor you are about to dig.
Do you work in the historic district?
Yes. Strand-area and East End properties carry pre-record utilities, and locating before any dig there is the difference between a project and an archaeology incident.
Do you cover the mainland side too?
Yes: Texas City, La Marque, and the industrial corridor are normal coverage.
Do you provide GPS or GIS utility mapping?
Yes. Located utilities are logged with GPS and delivered as PDF maps and KMZ exports, so the locate stays usable after the paint fades.
When is potholing needed after a locate?
When a bore or trench has to pass an existing line with required clearance, a vacuum excavated test hole converts an estimated depth into a measured one. Locating establishes horizontal position; potholing verifies depth.
