It was the fence crew, or the sign footing, or somebody augering holes for a shade structure in a parking lot. Small holes, shallow digging, and a lighting circuit sitting eighteen inches down that wasn't on anybody's drawing.</p><p>Underground electrical wire is a strange one in our trade. It's usually the easiest utility to trace, because it's conductive, and it's also the one with the least forgiveness built in. Copper doesn't negotiate. Required, useful, do it.</p><p>Then walk the site and count light poles.</p><p>Every parking lot pole, every illuminated sign, every gate operator, every landscape light is fed by a circuit the property owner installed, and 811 does not mark an inch of it. On a typical commercial lot, the owner's electrical outweighs the utility's. It was probably installed by the low bidder decades ago, the conduit may or may not match any drawing that still exists, and it's shallow. That's the quick win, but passive sweeps miss things, especially lightly loaded or switched-off circuits, so we don't stop there.</p><p>The better trace is active: get access to a panel, a light pole base, or a junction box, clip a transmitter on, and follow the signal down the run. This is also why we ask for panel access and keys ahead of time. A locate where we can energize the circuits properly beats a drive-by sweep every time, and it's a big part of prepping a site well.</p><p>The stubborn case is dead PVC conduit with no wire we can energize, an abandoned run, or a spare duct. No conductor, no EM signal. Then it's <a data-mce-href="https://sitetwin.store/blog/understanding-gpr-scanning--a-beginner-s-guide" href="https://sitetwin.store/blog/understanding-gpr-scanning--a-beginner-s-guide">GPR</a>, and we're upfront that GPR results depend on soil. Most of the time between the two methods we corner it. When we can't say something with confidence, we mark what we know and tell you what we don't. You'd rather hear that before the auger goes in.</p><h2>Direct bury wire vs. conduit, and why you should care<br></h2><p>Power gets underground two ways. Direct burial cable is rated to sit in the dirt with nothing around it; wire in conduit runs through PVC or metal pipe. Installers choose based on cost and code. You should care because the two behave differently when someone digs.</p><p>Direct bury wire is the one a shovel finds first. No pipe, no warning, just jacketed conductor in the ground, and it's everywhere on older and budget installs: lot lighting, sign feeds, gate operators. It traces well on EM while it's energized, which is the good news.</p><p>Conduit cuts the other way. Metal conduit shows up on EM whether or not the wire inside is live. PVC conduit is the trap: if the run is abandoned, unenergized, or empty, there may be nothing conductive to trace at all, and it becomes a GPR target like any other plastic pipe. Under slabs and where circuits have extra protection, shallower still.</p><p>But what code says and what's under your site are different facts. Lots get regraded. Pavement gets milled and overlaid. A conduit that was legal in 1998 might be nine inches under today's surface.</p><p>EM locators estimate depth, and we treat those readings as estimates in front of clients, because that's what they are. Those get planned, located, and watched. It's the small stuff: running power to a shed or outbuilding, setting a carport, augering for a gate post, trenching thirty feet for a landscape panel. Small enough that nobody orders a locate, deep enough to reach a feeder.</p><p>If the trench crosses a lot that has any site lighting or existing improvements on it, the odds of an existing circuit in the path are better than people think. A one-hour locate on a small job is cheap insurance, and on the small jobs it's almost never bought. So before we talk about locating equipment at all, the ground rule: nobody guesses on gas. Not on depth, not on routing, not on "it should run straight from the meter."</p><h2>Call 811. Texas requires the notice at least two working days before you dig, and the ticket is good for 14 days, so build it into the schedule instead of treating it as a morning-of formality. The gas utility will come out and put yellow marks over the distribution lines they own near your dig.</p><p>What most people miss is where that service ends: the meter. The utility marks their side. Everything on the property side of that meter is the owner's pipe, and in most cases nobody from 811 is coming to find it.</p><p>On the commercial sites we work, the property side is where the surprises live. Gas run out to a detached kitchen. A line feeding a generator pad that got added years after the as-builts were drawn. Pool heaters, shop buildings, old lines that were "abandoned" on paper and never actually cut. Plastic pipe carries no signal. It's supposed to be buried with tracer wire so a locator can energize the wire and follow it, and when that wire is intact, fine. But tracer wire breaks, corrodes, and sometimes never got installed, and a poly gas line with dead tracer wire is one of the hardest targets any gas line locator faces. We wrote up why tracer wire fails in our <a data-mce-href="https://sitetwin.store/blog/-line-locating-methods-explained" href="https://sitetwin.store/blog/-line-locating-methods-explained">line locating methods</a> guide because it comes up that often.</p><p>When the wire's dead, we switch to <a data-mce-href="https://sitetwin.store/blog/understanding-gpr-scanning--a-beginner-s-guide" href="https://sitetwin.store/blog/understanding-gpr-scanning--a-beginner-s-guide">GPR</a> and work the area. Sometimes it images the line cleanly. In heavy, wet Gulf Coast clay, sometimes it doesn't, and we'll say so rather than paint a guess. A mark we're not confident in is worse than no mark, because a crew will trust it.</p><p>Meanwhile, the surface tells you a lot if you look. Meters, risers, and regulators don't feed themselves. Pipe arrives at every one of them, usually in a straight-ish run from the main.</li><li>Risers, the yellow-painted pipe coming up a wall or out of the ground at equipment.</li><li>Valve lids in pavement, often small round castings marked "GAS."</li><li>Cathodic protection test stations, the little posts along steel mains.</li><li>Patched trench lines in pavement running toward any of the above.<br></li></ul><p>None of that replaces a locate. All of it informs one. When we walk a site, half the initial picture comes from this kind of surface evidence, and a crew that learns to see it will catch problems the drawings don't show.</p><h2>How deep are gas lines buried?<br></h2><p>The standard answer is that distribution mains commonly run around 24 inches and services shallower, sometimes around 18. The truthful answer is that we've exposed gas at depths that matched no standard at all, especially on older services and on private pipe past the meter, which was installed by whoever the owner hired and inspected by nobody. Grade changes since installation move the number further.</p><p>So use the standard depths for planning, and never for digging. If your excavation gets within a couple feet of a marked gas line's depth range, you're in potholing territory, which brings us to the rule.</p><h2>The one rule we don't bend: pothole the crossing<br></h2><p>Paint on the grass is a horizontal estimate. It is not a depth, and it is not a guarantee.</p><p>So when a bore path or a deep trench crosses a gas line, we tell clients to <a data-mce-href="https://sitetwin.store/blog/what-is-potholing-daylighting-utilities" href="https://sitetwin.store/blog/what-is-potholing-daylighting-utilities">pothole it</a>. Physically expose the pipe, measure where it actually sits, then send the bore under it with real numbers. Directional drilling is blind by nature. The drill head doesn't know the poly service is there, and "the mark said it was over a foot away" is not a sentence anyone wants to be saying to a fire marshal.</p><p>Is potholing an extra line item? Yes.
